Constipation

A breastfed infant may only have a bowel movement every 10-14 days; this can be normal. However, if the abdomen is very bloated and the child seems to be in pain, assistance is required.

Especially when introducing solid foods, phases of constipation are not unusual.

For infants, you can use a glycerin suppository (Bulboid), which is available over the counter at pharmacies and usually provides quick and effective relief. Overly aggressive use of enemas, which are also available for children, carries the risk of traumatizing the child.

For older children with persistent or painful constipation, it may be necessary to start a laxative: Macrogol is an active ingredient that acts only locally in the bowel, is well-tolerated, does not cause dependency, and can be used over a longer period. Parents should consult their pediatrician for a medical history, examination, and discussion.

While drinking plenty of fluids and eating a diet rich in fiber and dried fruits is not wrong, studies show it does not help much.
