Concussion

If your child did not lose consciousness after hitting their head, calmed down after a short time, has no bump, no blood in the ear, no bruising behind the ear or around the eyes, is not vomiting, and is behaving as usual, then a serious injury is very unlikely.

If the accident involved a high-risk mechanism (as a general guide: a fall from a height of more than 1.50 m for children over 2 years old, or more than 90 cm for children under 2 years old; a car accident with other injuries; or any accident involving high speed), or if your child has a soft swelling on their head (like a waterbed), bruising behind the ear or around the eyes, blood in the ear, experienced a loss of consciousness, vomited more than twice, has memory loss (amnesia), severe headaches, twitching (seizures), or—most importantly—if your child is acting differently than usual and you as parents have a bad feeling, then you should have your child seen by a pediatrician promptly.
