Doing nothing about ADHD is equivalent to failing to provide assistance!

The topic of #ADHD is on everyone's lips, and it's not uncommon to hear people say:

• ADHD doesn't even exist
• They just want to sedate the children with medication

The ADHD spectrum is very broad, and the entire subject of #neurodiversity is multifaceted and complex. As a pediatrician, I hear stories that are truly heartbreaking. The author of a professional article once wrote: Not letting a patient with (severe) ADHD at least try methylphenidate medication is tantamount to a failure to provide assistance. A professor of neurology once remarked: A child with ADHD can crash an entire family. That sounds harsh, but he is right. The social impact of ADHD can be very severe—for everyone involved.

• When things are falling apart at home (and they can fall apart quite badly),
• when grades are poor (even though they really should be much better),
• when things aren't working out at the sports club,
• when the child is no longer allowed to attend after-school care,
• when they are sent home early from summer camp,
• when they have no friends and everyone is annoyed,
• … yes, then you have to do something.

Methylphenidate does not change the brain and has no long-term neurological effects. It provides the nerves with the missing portion of neurotransmitters so that information can be transmitted more effectively. That is exactly where patients with ADHD struggle. Healthy/neurotypical people can experience a kind of hyperfocus, which is why methylphenidate is sometimes misused by students for exams. Patients with ADHD do not feel the effect of the medication directly, but they notice what is happening around them. They "function" better themselves; they no longer get in their own way or in the way of others. And this is what they say: "Suddenly everyone is so nice to me."; "Finally, I have the joy of life back." And today, for the first time ever, Max played with me.
